Content Management System

Content Management SystemPurpose of a content management system.
Back in the early days of the world wide web (WWW) people built each page of their site using basic HTML. When a html page was complete the user would have to log onto their FTP server and upload all the files necessary for that page to display correctly. This was very cumbersome and time consuming. As years progressed and the internet became more mature with programming languages such as PHP, Javascript, ASP, and the newer Ruby on Rails, web developers realized there were much simpler ways to create a content rich web site without having to know complex programming langauges. Thus the birth of the Content Management System (CMS).

Today many content management systems use a database backend, like MySQL, and a server side scripting language, like PHP, to store information that is added by website administrators and even website visitors. A content management system not only eases the process of adding material to a website, but it allows new content to be added to the site in a uniform matter.

Most content management systems use a template, which may consist of items such as a menu system, header, content area, and footer. When a user wishes to add to the site he or she simply logs in and selects an option from the menu system which brings them to a page where they can enter their content as plain text or HTML code. For really advanced content management systems, a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get and pronounced whizy-wig) editor is available which allows the user to enter their content in a manner that is similar to using programs like Microsoft Word. Thus making the learning curve very short for new users.

Another key feature of content management systems is the ability to set up profiles for a range of users. Some parts of a site may contain sensitive material that you only wish for a particular set of users to see. As the site administrator you may set a particular user to a corresponding group which has privileges to certain areas of your site. Profiles could range from anonymous users which can view generic information, contributors who can add content to your site but not edit others, editors that can add content and make changes to other peoples work, and administrators, who can add new sections to the site, remove users, and basically have complete control over how the site runs and appears.

Content Management Systems have definitely become a great tool for web sites. It allows visitors of the site to feel more involved and provides administrators the ability to delegate task to trustworthy users of the site. With the right people involved, a web site with a content management system has the potential to grow at rates otherwise thought unachievable in such a short period of time.
